What is ESI ?
ESI is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. Employee's State Insurance (ESI) is a self-financing social security and health insurance scheme for Indian workers.
Benefits of ESI Registration
Medical Benefit
Full medical care is provided to all persons registered under ESI and their family members – from the day the person enters insurable employment. There is no ceiling on expenditure on the treatment of an Insured Person or his family member. Medical care is also provided to retired and permanently disabled insured persons and their spouses on payment of a token annual premium of Rs.120/-.
Maternity Benefit
Maternity benefit for confinement/pregnancy is provided for three months, which is extendable by further one month on medical advice at the rate of full wage subject to contribution for 70 days in the preceding year.
Disablement Benefit
From the day of entering insurable employment and irrespective of having paid any contribution, 90% of wage is payable so long as temporary disability continues. Permanent disablement benefit is payable at the rate of 90% of wage in the form of monthly payment, in case of permanent disablement based on the extent of loss of earning capacity as certified by a Medical Board.
Dependant Benefit
Dependant benefit is paid at the rate of 90% of wage in the form of monthly payment to the dependants of a deceased insured person, in cases death occurs due to employment injury or occupational hazards.
Funeral Expenses
An amount of Rs.10,000/- is payable to the dependents or to the person who performs last rites from day one of entering insurable employment.
Time Required for ESI Registration
ESI registration requires a time of 3-5 days.
Documents Required for ESI Registration
Following are the documents required for ESIC Registration:
- Registration certificate as obtained under – Factories Act and Shops and Establishment Act
- Certificate of registration in case of a company and partnership deed for a partnership firm
- MOA and AOA of the company
- List of all employees working in the establishment along with employee details such as name, father’s name, mobile number, date of birth, date of joining, salary, postal address, name of the nominee, grade, identity proof such as PAN or Aadhaar, bank account number etc.
- Attendance registers of the employees
- PAN card of the business establishment
- Scanned copy of the licenses received by the company such as GST
- A cancelled cheque of the bank account of the company
- Digital signature of the proprietor, partner or director as the case may be
- Directors’ list
- Shareholders’ list
- Address proof of the proprietor, partner or the company directors as the case may be
- Mobile number and email id of prietor, partner or director of the company as the case may be.
Process of ESI Registration
1. Once the documents are ready, the company can apply for registration by submitting the Employer’s Registration Form (Form-1).
2. A PDF format of the form is available on the website. Fill in the form and submit it to ESIC for registration on the official website.
3. Once verified, a registration number, a 17-digit unique identity will be provided to the organization. The ESI filings can be done once you receive the 17-digit number.
4. Employees registered under the scheme get an ESI card after submitting a form with photographs and details of family members.
5. Although the registration is permanent, and the number is valid for the lifetime of the company, any new changes, such as employee additions, need to be intimated to the ESI.
